Privacy Policy
We value your trust and we take your privacy seriously. Most visitors to our site are expected to be family members, friends, community members, or like-minded people with similar interests – in short, the people most important to us. Being a personal/family website, we really have no reason to collect personal information, the main concern of most people on the internet.
Unfortunately, being a personal/family website, there are many ways in which the personal privacy of our family, friends and community members can potentially be violated. Public posting of photographs containing the images of people and public posting of genealogical information about living relatives are just a couple of the situations in which a possible violation of privacy can occur. To protect ourselves, family and friends we are very careful about what we post on this site. Below are the basic guidelines we follow regarding privacy on this site.
If after reading the privacy policy, you have additional questions, please contact us. Also, if while viewing the site, you find any information or pictures on the site pertaining to you (or your children) that you are uncomfortable with, let us know and we will remove it immediately. This does not have to meet any legal definition for personal privacy – if you are uncomfortable with it, we are too.
This privacy policy applies to the internet web site of MontgomeryCrew.net as well as the photo archive site MontgomeryFamily.SmugMug.com.
Display of Photographs
This website (MontgomeryCrew.net) and our family photo archive (MontgomeryFamily.SmugMug.com) use the same privacy policy regarding the display of photographs. The SmugMug site links to this privacy policy. The following general rules are applied when displaying photographs on either site:
Photographs of people where they are easily recognizable or where they are the main subject of the photograph will generally be posted only in password protected website areas.
Photographs of people will only be displayed in public areas of the website with permission of the person(s) in the photograph (or of a parent if the photograph is of a minor).
Password protected areas will be divided by group or activity and separate areas will be given separate passwords. Only people associated with the pictures contained in that area will be provided access. For example, pictures taken at an AYSO soccer game will be posted in an area setup for the specific team photographed and only the children/parents/coaches associated with that specific team will be provided with the password.
Exceptions to the above may include strangers or groups of strangers who are in public places, happen to be in the picture, and are not the main subject of the picture. Such situations are legally covered under “fair use”, but usually we will still avoid displaying such pictures in public areas, especially if a child is in the picture. If anyone finds their image (or one of their child) on any of our sites and would like it removed for any reason, contact us and we will remove it immediately.
Display of Personal Information
This website (MontgomeryCrew.net) and our family photo archive (MontgomeryFamily.SmugMug.com) use the same privacy policy regarding the posting of personal information. The SmugMug site links to this privacy policy. The following general rules are applied when displaying personal information on either site:
Complete names (first and last) of people referenced on our website will not be used in any publicly viewable areas without approval of the person.
Complete names may be used in password protected website areas.
No other personal information, including but not limited to mailing address, email address, and telephone number will ever be posted to any area of the website (password protected or not).
Display of Genealogical Information
This website, like the websites of many amateur genealogists, contains personal information associated with our families various ancestors and their descendants. Our database contains information on thousands of people, both deceased and living. The sharing of this information among other genealogists is an important aspect of genealogical research and the internet has made the sharing of information much easier. Unfortunately, the internet is also used by unscrupulous people for fraudulent purposes. As a result, it is important that genealogists carefully sanitize databases of personal information on living persons before posting in public areas of the internet or providing the data to other genealogists.
A number of groups have established guidelines for the sharing of genealogical information. These guidelines are intended to both promote the accurate distribution of genealogical data and protect the privacy of living persons. The National Genealogical Society has published a set of Standards For Sharing Information With Others which this site follows. In addition, this site goes well beyond the standards established by the NGS. The rules followed by this website include, but are not limited to:
Exact birthdates of living persons will not be provided (year only).
Other personal information such as marriage information, Social Security Number, medical information, education history, employment history, etc. will not be provided for any living person.
Contact information for living persons will never be published on the site (password protected or not). Contact information will not be provided to an interested third-party without the explicit consent of the person to which the contact information belongs.
These rules are far more restrictive than legal requirements regarding individual privacy protection and are also more restrictive than most published guidelines regarding disclosure of private information, but given the possible misuse of personal information, they are believed to be appropriate.
If any situations are found where the above rules are mistakenly violated, please let us know and the problem will be corrected.
